Culture
“Culture” is an imaginary hegemonic ideal that is historically and socially contingent. A better question than “What is culture?” would be “this particular practice or belief is called ‘cultural’. Who called it that, and why did they do so?” Namely, who is benefiting from calling something culture, and who is being disadvantaged by it. Also, what awesome possibilities could you be ignoring by thinking in terms of ‘culture’ boundaries. In my opinion, the only ‘culture’ worth protecting is practices and beliefs that don’t disenfranchise or harm others.
